PERSONAL DETAILS

Originally from Osizweni Township, in Newcastle, Amajuba District, Mrs N.I. Vilakazi'?s career path started as a Social Worker in the Department. She then rose to the positions of Chief Social Worker, Assistant Director, Deputy Director, Director and Regional Chief Director.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Social Work, Honours in BA Social Work, and Masters of Art in Social Science from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Bachelor of Technology degree in Management from Durban University of Technology and is now pursuing a PhD, focusing on women and poverty.

Mrs Vilakazi is happy to land a hand in the fight against poverty, gender-based violence and other social ills. Her mission is to make a contribution in changing the lives of the people of KwaZulu-Natal. She strongly believes that women and youth can grow the economy of the province if they can be given an opportunity.

"Social Development is inextricably linked to economic development. That is why it is important to move towards evidence-based planning, which is a strategic approach in ensuring that there is an impact that is felt and seen by everyone because of the intervention of the Department of Social Development," says Mrs Vilakazi.

Mrs Vilakazi, affectionetly known as Nelly, uMaHlatshwayo, is a passionate parent and wife. Born to Annie and Zaba, Mrs Vilakazi is married to her childhood friend and is blessed with two children (a university student and a high school learner). She has four brothers, one sister and a beautiful mother-in-law, uMaZwane, who is her support structure and plays motherly role in her career and life in general.

Her motto is, "In everything you do, be the best that you were born to be."
