Social Work Scholarship Programme

The Social Work Scholarship Programme is a government intervention aimed at addressing the shortage of social workers by building their capacity to address the social and economic issues in the country.

Qualification Criteria

To qualify for Social Work Scholarship, you must be a citizen or have permanent residence of the Republic of South Africa. You must a registered student in any University Offering social work studies. If you are not registered yet, you should submit grade 11 or 12 results with conditional admission letter from a University. Submit certified copies of your parent or guardian proof of income and affidavit, if you are not employed. You must be able to demonstrate the potential to complete the degree in record time. Also provide certified copies of a South African.

Targeted Audience

Social Work Scholarship Programme targets the following categories of people:

  • Financially needy students
  • Unemployed youth between the ages 18 and 35 who wish to enrol for a Social Work BA Degree from level 1 to 4 in a recognised university.
  • Disadvantaged students who are registered but cannot pay their study fees to compete their Social Work degrees.
  • Children in foster care and places of safety, who want to pursue a Social Work Degree.
  • Duration of a Scholarship

    The period for which the Social Work Scholarship is awarded will coincide with the minimum prescribed duration of the specific selected full-time field f study as determined by an accredited institute of higher learning or the remainder of the full study period time remaining, if already registered. Candidates who have to repeat a year of study must do so at their own costs. Such candidates must apply for deferment of obligations, Value of the Scholarship.
    The actual study fees include registration, tuition, accommodation, field work, exams and books.

    The scholarship is advertised through print media and at all tertiary institutions in South Africa that offer identified qualifications. Scholarship application forms are obtainable from the Department Of Social Development and relevant universities at the time when scholarships are advertised. All deadlines for scholarship applications return must be strictly observed.
